NCH Healthcare System Improving Patient Satisfaction with Cerner CareAware myStation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. and NAPLES, Fla. — Feb. 19, 2014 — Patients are better informed — and happier — at NCH Healthcare System (NCH) in Naples, Fla.

Since implementing Cerner’s interactive technology, CareAware myStation, in August 2012, NCH has seen a 25 percent increase in patient satisfaction ratings according to scores from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys.

Available through an in-room interactive television system, CareAware myStation offers patients and families tools necessary to stay fully engaged in the daily plan of care. Information about patient tasks, scheduled events and discharge plans educates patients about their hospital stay, and begins preparing them to manage their own care at home.

“Informed patients can readily make decisions with their health care provider,” said Michele Thoman, RN, chief nursing officer, NCH Healthcare System. “CareAware myStation allows that patient to be engaged in their care — not just a recipient of care.”

Direct integration with the electronic health record enables doctors and nurses to order education within the patient’s chart for viewing in CareAware myStation. Comprehensive education about patient conditions, upcoming procedures and new medications has increased NCH’s HCAHPS medication teaching ratings by 15 percent.

Patients are also provided with real-time notifications for pain management assessments, falls prevention, discharge planning and information about assigned caregivers.

“Patient and family members no longer ask, ‘Who is he or she? What are they here to do?’” Thoman said. “Now, I’m more informed as a patient. I know who is in my room. I know why they’re there to see me.”

After realizing tangible improvements in patient satisfaction, NCH plans to expand the capabilities of CareAware myStation to extend patient engagement beyond the hospital, providing patients with ongoing access to education and care plan information at home.

“The benefits of our collaboration with NCH extend beyond our individual organizations; most importantly, they extend to those giving and receiving care,” said Don Bisbee, senior vice president of DeviceWorks at Cerner. “NCH has created a foundation that will leverage the CareAware® platform for future innovations and generate new clinical value.”
