athenahealth’s ‘More Disruption Please’ Accelerator Program Adds Two Portfolio Companies and Expands Nationally

athenahealth, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based services and mobile tools for medical groups and health systems, today announced:

New Partners and New Location – Today, MDP welcomes two portfolio companies to its Boston-based Accelerator. Joining the Boston lineup is CredSimple, a medical credentialing solution for hospitals and health insurers that automates the verification of providers’ qualifications; and RubiconMD, a medical referral company that connects primary care physicians with specialist expertise at the point of care via remote consults. Both startups will receive seed funding, free office space, mentorship, and access to athenahealth’s network of providers.

In addition, the MDP San Francisco Accelerator is now accepting applications from local, mid-stage health care startups that will share the new athenahealth office space at 50 Hawthorne located in downtown’s South of Market district. In the near future, athenahealth plans to roll out co-working space in which non-portfolio companies can rent space and share knowledge in Boston, San Francisco, and potentially other athenahealth office locations.

Smart Scheduling Graduates to athenahealth Marketplace – The MDP Accelerator’s first portfolio company, Smart Scheduling, a developer of predictive scheduling analytics, joins the roster of HIT and workflow efficiency solutions on the athenahealth Marketplace accessible to more than 59,000 providers in athenahealth’s national cloud network. Chris Moses, CEO of Smart Scheduling, said, “Breaking into the health care market is tough, but MDP’s Accelerator has fast-tracked our time to market by facilitating inbound lead generation and simplifying the task of network integration through the athenahealth API. This has helped us win multiple high-profile clients in record time.”

Martin’s Point Health Care, an athenahealth client and medical group with 80 providers, implemented Smart Scheduling to predict the likelihood of patient no-shows and cancellations as part of a pilot program. By using Smart Scheduling’s call list to prioritize calls and confirm appointments, their show rate has jumped from 62 percent to 92 percent for confirmed patients. Terry Baldwin, director of operational excellence at Martin’s Point Health Care, said, “With this intelligence, we can proactively reduce last-minute cancellations which improves the flow of our day and maximizes our availability to see patients.  This translates to increased revenue and is a win-win for our patients and our care teams.”

Partnering with HITRUST – MDP is lowering the barriers of entry for high-potential health IT startups and entrepreneurs by joining forces with HITRUST. Through this partnership, HITRUST will provide Marketplace partners with data security risk assessments that will be subsidized by athenahealth. The HITRUST CSF Certification is a leading standard by which the industry measures compliance. The CSF Assessments will be hugely beneficial to startups that are part of MDP as it provides an independent verification of security integrity and gives athenahealth clients additional assurance that information is secure when accessing the best-in-breed technologies on the Marketplace.
