athenahealth and Epocrates Announce Two Point-of-Care Innovations
WATERTOWN, Mass., Feb. 11, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — athenahealth, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based services for electronic health record (EHR), practice management, and care coordination, and Epocrates, the developer of the #1 medical application among U.S. physicians, today announced two point-of-care innovations to improve providers’ access to information in moments of care. Healthcare providers can leverage the power of Epocrates in the following ways:
- Directly within the athenaClinicals®EHR – As of February 22, key drug monograph content from Epocrates’ valued and trusted drug reference, Epocrates Rx®, will be available as part of athenaClinicals, the most usable ambulatory electronic medical record (EMR) system, as rated by health care providers in the 2013 KLAS report on Ambulatory EMR Usability. As part of a new workflow, providers who use athenaClinicals will gain streamlined access to valuable information on dosing, contraindications, adverse reactions, and other key safety information for thousands of brand and generic drugs without having to leave their EHR interface. Additional sections of Epocrates’ drug monographs will be introduced into athenaClinicals over time.
- Through the Enhanced Drug Interaction Features in the Epocrates App – Epocrates has upgraded its InteractionCheck®, the most valued Epocrates feature affecting prescribing changes, as well as its drug monographs (complete with a new Drug Interaction Overview section). Health care providers now have access to advanced, detailed profiles of a drug’s interaction potential and risks to better determine why potentially harmful drug interactions occur, to more easily identify individual ingredients responsible, and to help make necessary adjustments or substitutions. These features are exclusively found in the Epocrates mobile app or on Epocrates® Online.
“For years, health care providers have gone back and forth between their Epocrates mobile app and their EHR screen. Now, the power of Epocrates lives right inside athenaClinicals. Here’s a tangible example of the synergy between Epocrates and athenahealth,” said Anne Meneghetti, MD, executive director of medical information at Epocrates. “Nearly 50 percent of physicians tell us that they save 20 minutes or more a day by using Epocrates, and on average, 60 percent avoid adverse drug events once or more a week. The value of Epocrates among providers is tremendous, and we’re working to extend that value in two fundamental ways—by enriching the quality of content we deliver and by expanding providers’ access to critical information. Together, the Epocrates and athenahealth teams are focused on connecting providers with high-value resources during moments of care.”
Dr. Mamle Anim, an internist at Wright State Physicians, sees the advantages of integrated resources. “I often juggle multiple screens to get the information I need at the point of care. With Epocrates’ monographs embedded into my EHR, I no longer need to pull out my smartphone to look up accurate clinical pearls, dosing, and safety information. The convenience and time savings are invaluable. athenahealth has set the gold standard for all other EHR’s to follow!”
