Practice Fusion Adds Medi-Span Drug Database to EHR Platform Impacting 4 Million e-Prescriptions a Month

Practice Fusion, the #1 cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) for doctors and patients, announced that it is partnering with Wolters Kluwer Health to integrate the Medi-Span core drug database, an industry-leading resource for prescription and over-the-counter drug information and drug interactions, into the Practice Fusion EHR platform. The medical professionals that use the Practice Fusion EHR will have access to the latest medication information and recommended dosages when they e-prescribe medications to patients.

Key Points about the Practice Fusion- Medi-Span Integration:

“Wolters Kluwer Health is proud to partner with Practice Fusion, an organization that shares our passion for enhancing patient care through technology that also advances the clinician’s user experience,” stated Steven Kerscher, Vice President & General Manager, Clinical Drug Information, Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions.  “Our Medi-Span offerings have led the industry in EHR-integrated drug data and medication decision support for over 40 years, helping improve efficiency and reduce medication errors through timely drug information and more meaningful alerts.”

The integration of the Medi-Span database into the Practice Fusion EHR will help ensure that providers using the Practice Fusion EHR have the latest information on therapeutics, including newly approved medications.  Medi-Span content also provides pre-configured prescription medication orders for more than 5,000 of the most common prescriptions, enabling e-prescribing providers to more easily enter prescriptions, while helping to reduce medication prescription errors.

Providers save time by getting relevant and up-to-date prescription medication information directly through the Practice Fusion EHR, and patients can get the right medication they need.  Clinical decision support interventions through Medi-Span drug-drug and drug-allergy checks offer real-time alerts to providers about possible drug interactions that could otherwise affect their patients’ health.

“Patients have over 2 million adverse reactions each year leading to over 2,000 deaths from drug interactions.  By integrating with Medi-Span, we can help ensure that doctors not only have the last approved medications and their side effects, but also that they are quickly alerted while they are writing a prescription about any potential adverse reactions that may harm their patients,” said Ryan Howard, founder and CEO, Practice Fusion.  “This service is live and impacting more than four million prescriptions written by doctors using Practice Fusion’s EHR platform each month.”
